Hash Rate
The total computing power of the Bitcoin network, measured in hashes per second.
Definition
Hash rate is the measure of the total computational power dedicated to mining Bitcoin. It is expressed in exahashes per second (EH/s). A higher hash rate means a more secure network, since more energy and hardware would be required to mount a 51% attack. The hash rate has grown almost without interruption since 2009, reflecting miners' growing investment in infrastructure. It is also an indirect indicator of the marginal cost of producing one Bitcoin.
