Strategic Reserve
Bitcoin accumulated by companies or governments as a long-term reserve asset.
Definition
A Strategic Bitcoin Reserve is the stock of BTC that an entity — a company, sovereign wealth fund, or government — holds on its balance sheet as a long-term reserve asset, much like gold or foreign currency reserves. The term gained traction when the United States announced in 2025 its intention to create a sovereign Bitcoin reserve. Countries such as El Salvador and Bhutan have been accumulating BTC for years. For companies, Bitcoin as a strategic reserve is the alternative to cash being eroded by inflation.
