Cold Storage
Storing Bitcoin in wallets with no internet connection.
Definition
Cold storage refers to keeping Bitcoin private keys on devices or media with no permanent internet connection, such as hardware wallets, paper, or air-gapped devices. It is the security standard for institutions custodying large amounts of BTC. The alternative is a hot wallet (connected), which is more convenient but more vulnerable. Corporate treasury companies like Strategy delegate custody to specialized providers such as Coinbase Custody or use in-house multi-sig solutions.
